Using A Bed Bug Spray

Bed bugs are a very unpleasant subject. It's bad enough having an insect infestation, it's even worse having an infestation of insects that feed on human blood.

Bed bugs are tiny reddish brown insects that are flattish and oval in shape and that come out of hiding at night to bite and feed. And they are slow feeders taking up to 10 minutes to suck the blood and become engorged. Being so small they are not easy to see and spend most of their time hiding away in crevices. As the name suggests, hiding in your bed is a popular way of life for a bed bug, but they'll hide in cracks in floor boards, curtains, sofas, etc.

Once common, bed bugs went into decline large because of better housing, personal hygiene and with the use of chemicals that are banned today because of their toxicity. Unfortunately bed bugs are making a come back and one of the easiest ways to pick them up is by travelling. Hotels and motels, both home and abroad, have a certain reputation for being bed bug hotspots simply because so many people pass through carrying possible infestations on their clothes and belongings. If you come into contact with bed bugs there you can transfer them home and have your very own bed bug problem in no time at all.

Having a bed bug infestation has nothing to do with lack of cleanliness. Bed bugs don't care how clean or dirty your house is and even if you frequently vacuum clean your mattress they'll be enough bed bugs, eggs and larvae let behind to continue going.

These days people are far more reluctant to use pesticides in the home but they do provide a quick and simple way to eradicate bed bugs and unlike in days gone by, bed bug sprays are rigorously tested to ensure they are safe to use in a domestic environment.

There are two main ways of eradicating bed bugs with chemicals. The first is the least common and that is by using a chemical dust to destroy the protective waxy coating on the bed bug causing them to dry out. The more common way is by using a bed bug spray containing a contact pesticide. This kills them instantly and the residue of the spray remains active for several days or weeks.

Always read the manufactures instructions thoroughly. However some good tips for treating your mattress with a bed bug spray include applying the spray lightly over the bed frame and the mattress, you don’t need to drench the area. And don't forget the sides and the bottom of the mattress as well. Also remember to move your bed and spray the flooring underneath. Allow the bed to dry thoroughly before putting the bedding back on.

Unfortunately a bed bug infestation is difficult to get rid off so you may need to do several treatments throughout the house to knock out any newly hatched larvae and bugs that may have evaded the spray.

Remember, if you find yourself covered in bites you don't have to suffer. Bed bug sprays are readily available via the internet and with a little persistence you'll be able to kill those blood sucking little horrors.
